J.O.O.N.A.S. Cleaning Robots

J.O.O.N.A.S. units are the autonomous cleaning robots that let you stop sweeping by hand. They were the most complained-about system at launch and were rebuilt almost entirely in v1.0.4 — including the change that finally made them useful: they now keep cleaning when nobody is watching.

Everything marked as confirmed below is quoted from DragDrop Games' v1.0.4 notes. Practical advice sections are labelled as inference from that documented behaviour, not as developer recommendations.

What J.O.O.N.A.S. Does

A J.O.O.N.A.S. unit is an autonomous cleaner assigned to a sector of the Moon. It works through that sector on its own, packs the dust it collects into capsules, and gets those capsules to your Capsule Catcher without you touching anything. It is what turns the game from a manual sweeping job into an operation you supervise.

The official store description frames progression as tools → capacity → depots → cleaning vehicles. J.O.O.N.A.S. sits at the end of that chain: once you can afford robots, the limiting factor stops being your sweeping speed and becomes how well you have placed your catchers.

What v1.0.4 Actually Changed

This table is the short version of the rework. If you read older advice anywhere — including guides written during launch week — check it against this:

BehaviourBefore v1.0.4After v1.0.4
Working when unattendedFrequently stopped once players walked awayKeeps cleaning even when no players are nearby
UnloadingDrove back to a dock to drop offLaunches capsules to the nearest catcher from wherever it is, then moves on
Cleaning speedSlower, with circling and idle timeRoughly 2x faster per official notes
Working patternLess deterministic coverageOne hex at a time, outside in, until that hex is 100% done
Getting stuckStruggled around structuresFinds its way around buildings and skips unreachable hexes
Capacity feedbackLess visibleGauge flashes red when full
VisibilityHard to tell what it was doingSector tracking plus map icons showing each robot's current activity

The developers named the stopping issue as one of their highest priorities in their October 24 message to players, and shipped the rework about a day later. That turnaround is a fair signal of how responsive this two-person studio currently is.

Confirmed Behaviour, Item by Item

  • No more dock trips — each unit cleans a sector and launches capsules to the nearest catcher while already moving to the next sector.
  • Cleaning speed — roughly doubled; the unit cleans one hex at a time from the outside in until that hex is completely clean.
  • Smarter navigation — routes around buildings and skips hexes it cannot physically reach.
  • Always working — continues cleaning with no players nearby, which is what makes a large map viable.
  • Bin indicator — the gauge flashes red when the unit is full. Look at J.O.O.N.A.S. to open its information panel.
  • Sector tracking — shows which sector the unit is currently cleaning.
  • Map presence — all robots appear on the Moon map with their current activity, and each robot type can be toggled on or off.

Placing Capsule Catchers

Because robots now launch capsules to the nearest catcher from wherever they stand, your catcher placement directly caps their output. The v1.0.4 patch also raised the Capsule Catcher capacity to 100 kg and made its glass show the collected dust.

  1. Put catchers inside or immediately beside the sectors you intend to robot-clean, not back at base.
  2. Remember capacity is 100 kg per catcher — enough pile-up means the robot's gauge flashing red with nowhere to send it.
  3. Check them along your routes rather than relying on a return trip you no longer have to make.
  4. Use the Moon map to see which robots are active and whether they are actually progressing through their sector.

The step-by-step above is practical inference from documented behaviour — the patch notes confirm *that* robots send capsules to the nearest catcher and what the capacity is, but do not publish layout advice. Treat general placement tips elsewhere the same way.

Monitoring Your Robots

v1.0.4 added several ways to see what the fleet is doing without walking to each unit:

  • Moon Map — right-click to set waypoints, focus the camera or teleport; robots show their current activity and you can toggle each type on or off.
  • Information panel — look directly at a J.O.O.N.A.S. unit to see its current sector and whether its bin is full.
  • Ground sync (co-op) — since v1.0.4 everyone sees the same cleaned ground, including robot trails, so progress is no longer ambiguous between crewmates.

Still Unpublished

DragDrop Games has not published: how many J.O.O.N.A.S. units you can run, what they cost to build or unlock, whether there are multiple models with different stats, or what triggers their availability in progression. We don't guess at those numbers — check your build, and expect the official Discord to know fastest.
